Why Being a Teacher Makes Me a Better Wedding Celebrant

Why Being a Teacher and Wedding Celebrant Are the Perfect Match

…and how both roles are rooted in connection, heart, and presence.

When I tell people I’m both a teacher and a wedding celebrant, I often see a smile followed by: “That’s an interesting combination!” But to me, teaching and celebrancy go hand in hand more naturally than you might expect.

At the heart of both is people - understanding them, supporting them, and helping them shine in their moment. Whether it’s guiding a couple through their vows or sharing their love story with friends and family, my work is about connection and creating meaningful experiences.

Listening: The Foundation of a Personal Wedding Ceremony

As a teacher, I’ve learned to really listen - to what’s said, and what’s not. I notice the unspoken worries of a student, just as I notice the subtle hopes a couple shares about their wedding day.

This deep listening is how I create wedding ceremonies that feel truly “you.” I take the time to get to know your love story and reflect it in a way that feels genuine, joyful, and memorable.

Confident & Comfortable in Front of a Crowd

Public speaking can be daunting, but years of teaching have given me confidence, warmth, and the ability to read a room.

Whether I’m welcoming guests, guiding you through your vows, or creating a moment for everyone to laugh (or shed a happy tear), I know how to set the right tone so your wedding feels relaxed and full of love.

I also honed the art of organising people without them realising they're being organised (a very useful skill if you're a celebrant!), so I'll get people where they need to be, and doing what they're supposed to be doing, without them even being aware of it!

Organised but Flexible

Teaching has taught me the value of planning - while also being ready for the unexpected.

Weddings don’t always go exactly to plan - I've lost count of the times something has cropped up last minute that needs to be dealt with (think powercuts/missing musicians/wardrobe malfunctions/children not doing what they're meant to be doing!). I’m calm under pressure, love problem-solving (in fact, I'd say it's one of my fortes!) and am always focused on the people in front of me, ensuring your ceremony runs smoothly while still feeling personal and full of heart.

Building Real, Lasting Connections

The most rewarding part of both teaching and wedding celebrancy is the relationships. I love learning how couples met, what makes them laugh, and what milestones have shaped their journey together.

Every wedding ceremony I create is a one-off - crafted to reflect you as a couple and celebrate your unique story, so I take the time to really get to know you both. In fact, I love connecting with people so much, that my worst part of the whole process of being your celebrant is saying goodbye to my lovely couples after the ceremony! By that point I always feel like I know them both so well that it's like saying goodbye to a couple of friends... I'll just have to wait for your 10 year vow renewals!! (Or did I mention I also do naming ceremonies?!.... ;) ).
