Life is full of special moments - milestones that deserve to be cherished and celebrated. Naming and welcoming ceremonies are a beautiful way to honour identity, love, and belonging in a way that feels personal and meaningful. Whether welcoming a new baby, celebrating an adoption, affirming a name change, or bringing families together, these ceremonies create lasting memories that honour the people we love.

What is a Naming or Welcoming Ceremony?

A naming or welcoming ceremony is a non-religious celebration that marks an important transition or milestone in a person’s life. Unlike traditional christenings, these ceremonies are completely flexible, allowing families and individuals to create a unique and personal experience that reflects their beliefs, values, and culture.

As a celebrant, I guide families through creating heartfelt and meaningful ceremonies, ensuring each one is as unique as the person being celebrated.

Different Types of Naming & Welcoming Ceremonies:

Baby Naming Ceremonies

Welcoming a new baby into the world is a moment of pure joy. A baby naming ceremony is a wonderful way to introduce your child to family and friends, officially acknowledge their name, and express your hopes and dreams for their future. Some families include symbolic rituals, such as lighting candles, planting trees, or appointing “guide parents” (or my personal favourite - "Fairy Guide Parents"!) to play a special role in the child’s life.

Adoption Welcoming Ceremonies

Adoption is a journey filled with love, patience, and joy. A welcoming ceremony honours the moment a child becomes part of their forever family, celebrating their place in their new home and community. These ceremonies provide an opportunity to affirm love and commitment while recognising the incredible journey of both the child and their family, and recognising the importance of community.

Renaming Ceremonies (for gender transitions or personal name changes)

For many individuals, choosing a new name is an important step in affirming their identity. A renaming ceremony is a powerful and affirming way to celebrate this transition, whether it’s for someone who has changed their name as part of their gender journey or simply chosen a name that better reflects who they truly are. This ceremony is a chance to share this meaningful step with loved ones in a supportive and joyful way.

Blended Family Ceremonies

When families come together through marriage or partnership, it’s a special moment of transformation. A blended family ceremony celebrates the joining of step-families, recognising the love, commitment, and shared future ahead. Many families choose to include children in symbolic rituals, such as sand blending or unity candles, to visually represent their new bond.

Coming-Out Ceremonies

Coming out is a deeply personal experience, and for many, it’s a moment to be honoured and celebrated. A coming-out ceremony provides a safe and affirming space for individuals to share their authentic selves with family and friends. It can be as private or as public as desired, offering a way to mark the moment with love, support, and joy.

Baby Naming After Passing

For families who have experienced the loss of a child, a naming ceremony can be a deeply meaningful way to honour their presence and acknowledge their place in the family. Whether through words, music, or symbolic gestures, these ceremonies provide space for remembrance, love, and healing.

Why Choose a Naming or Welcoming Ceremony?

These ceremonies are a way to bring people together, celebrate love, and recognise the importance of identity and belonging. They offer:

  • Personalisation – Every ceremony is unique and tailored to reflect individual wishes, values, and beliefs.

  • Inclusivity – A safe and welcoming space for all individuals and families, regardless of background, gender, or identity.

  • A Lasting Memory – A chance to create a heartfelt and meaningful moment that will be remembered for years to come.
